Malware provided by Google Ads drains an NFT influencer’s whole Cryptocurrency Wallet

Google Ads have become a popular way for cybercriminals to deliver malware and drain the cryptocurrency wallets of NFT influencers. This malicious activity takes advantage of the trend of non-fungible tokens (NFTs) and the growing number of influencers in this space.

Alex referred to as “NFT God,” stated that he utilized Google’s search results to acquire OBS, an open-source video streaming tool, but accidentally clicked on a sponsored link that he thought was the official website. 

Then I get the DM I’ve been dreading. “Dude you WETH’d your ape?”

I pop open the Opensea bookmark of my ape and there it is. A completely different wallet listed as the owner.

The following day, his Substack account was hacked, and the attackers sent phishing emails to his 16,000 subscribers.

I’d lose this ugly snot nosed monkey PFP and all my Ethereum 100 times over if it meant I kept the trust and love of those who support me.

I honestly was able to keep my cool through losing all my digital assets.

NFT Influencers must stay alert

NFT influencers are particularly vulnerable to this attack because they often have large amounts of cryptocurrency and are less likely to be aware of online fraud risks. Many influencers also rely on Google Ads to promote their NFTs and may not be aware that the ads they are clicking on could lead to malware.

To protect themselves from this type of attack, NFT influencers should be cautious when clicking on links in Google Ads. They should use reputable antivirus software to protect their devices. They should also be cautious of any unsolicited messages or emails that demand personal information or cryptocurrency wallet details.

Google ads should also be more proactive in detecting and removing malicious ads from their platform. This includes increased monitoring of ads for suspicious activity and imposing stricter rules…
